Packaged Drinking Water Without BIS Mark Cannot Be Sold

With an increasing awareness to public safety and in a step to irradiate the possibility of water borne diseases spreading in the state, the highest regulatory body in the country, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has made it compulsory for all packaged mineral water companies to have the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) mark.

This assertion is seen as a positive for the citizens of the state with the increase in the number of package drinking water manufacturers, suppliers and distributors in Chennai. The quality of water supplied by the local bodies had been in scrutiny for long but the highest authority had said that this applies to all packaged and mineral water companies that sell for profits making it clear that the government supply does not come into play.

Illegal Packaged Drinking Water Units Suffer Set Back, this move has clearly put those illegal packaged drinking water companies on the back foot as they cannot sell drinking water to the public if they do not adhere to the FSSAI and get the BIS mark. This clearly sets aside companies such as our company which have been focused on providing clean and pure drinking water in West Bengal whilst many other companies have not taken it as seriously.

Supply By Local Bodies Does Not Fall Under This Ambit. The FSSAI has made it clear that the local bodies do not fall under the ambit of the Green Tribunal under which this rule has been enforced, as providing water to the public as a constitutional right cannot fall into this category and hence the quality of such water need to comply with the rules of the FSSAI.

This clearly indicates that water from BIS and FSSAI registered mineral water manufacturers and suppliers in West Bengal have the edge and health conscious individuals will do good to get water from such sources as Wavy.
